BRCA1 and BRCA2 hereditary cancer analysis

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes associated with hereditary breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancer predisposition. Genetic testing may be considered when personal or family history suggests an inherited risk.

Assessment may be relevant for:

  • breast cancer diagnosed at a young age;
  • ovarian, fallopian tube or primary peritoneal cancer;
  • male breast cancer;
  • pancreatic or metastatic prostate cancer in the family; or
  • several relatives with breast or related cancers.

What testing involves

A clinician or genetic counsellor reviews the personal and family history and recommends the appropriate analysis. Results are interpreted in context and should be discussed with the referring healthcare professional. A result does not replace medical advice or recommended screening.
