Hereditary cancer genetic analysis
Some cancers are associated with inherited genetic variants. Genetic analysis can help assess hereditary cancer risk when there is a relevant personal or family history. Testing should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
Who may be referred for assessment?
- people with a strong family history of cancer;
- people diagnosed with cancer at an unusually young age;
- families with several relatives affected by related cancers; or
- people referred by their oncologist or genetic counsellor.
Testing approach
The appropriate panel is selected according to the clinical and family history. Results are interpreted in context and may support personalised discussion with the referring clinician. A genetic result does not replace medical advice or routine screening.
For breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancer predisposition, see the BRCA1 / BRCA2 service page.
